Near and far prophecies
In Luke 21, Jesus told his disciples that the days would come when the Temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed, when not one stone would be left on another. They asked Him, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?
Jesus proceeds to tell them what the years after His death would bring to Jerusalem. Included in this list of warnings and disasters are NEAR prophecies - those soon to be fulfilled - and FAR prophecies that would not be fulfilled until shortly before His SECOND coming.
First, 70 A.D.
We know that the near prophecies came to pass within a generation after the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus: the Roman armies laid siege to the city of Jerusalem and ultimately destroyed it, and the Temple, in 70 AD. Jews fell by the sword and were led away captive into other nations, just as Jesus said.
But He went on:
" ...and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
Who are the Gentiles?
The "Gentiles?" That is, all the non-Jewish nations and peoples.
The "times of the Gentiles?" That's now! All the years from the time of the Messiah being "cut off" (killed), Daniel 9:26.
"...until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled?" This time period has no years assigned to it - it is a "mystery," as Paul says (Romans 11:25), but when the Rapture occurs, taking all Christians off the earth, that will mark the end of the times of the Gentiles.

The time of wrath, the Great Tribulation
Then at last will proceed the seventieth week, the last set of seven years which the messenger (angel) Gabriel told Daniel was decreed for his people and for the holy city.
The Christian world is not united in this belief, but it is what I believe.
Rapture vs Second Coming
The "Rapture" occurs in the twinkling of an eye. Jesus comes in the clouds, and we believers join Him in the clouds. He does not return to the earth.
The "Second Coming" is a different matter: Christ returns to the earth and wages war with "the sword of His mouth," and all enemies are vanquished, and a new era begins.
Distress of NATIONS, not only the Jews
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
The second coming of Jesus will be with power
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
