Who did Jesus die for?
I John 2:2 is one of those Bible verses that makes it plain that Jesus really did die for the sins of the whole world, and not just an elect few, as some Bible teachers hold.
Propitiation? It is appeasement, payment, satisfaction of God's righteousness. His righteousness and justice were placated when Jesus died in our place, deserving of death as we are.

Deserving of death?
As the Passover Lamb showed the Hebrews every year (if they were paying attention), a price - in blood - was necessary to cover their sins, and they recognized this by painting their doorposts and lintel with the blood of a perfect lamb.
As Leviticus 17:11 says, "The life of the flesh is in the blood." (This may be one reason God forbade the eating/drinking of blood, which Satanists are believed to do.)
The Passover Lamb was a picture of the one who would come, Jesus. That annual sacrifice of an animal did not pay for sin, but served as a reminder year by year that the Messiah would come.
Hebrews 10:11-14
11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
So... all are saved?
Does this verse teach Universalism, the doctrine that says that the whole world will make it to heaven because Christ died for all? No!
Salvation is offered, but it must be accepted.
John 1:12 - "But as many as RECEIVED Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name..."
Revelation 22:17 - "Come. And let him that is thirsty come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."
John 6:47 - "Verily, verily, I say unto you, whoever believes on Me has everlasting life."
I Timothy 4:10 - "We trust in the living God, Who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe." (These are the ones who EXPERIENCE salvation!)
I Timothy 2:3-4 - "God Our Savior, Who desires ALL MEN to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."
There is a prominent branch of the Christian church, usually called "Reformed" or "Calvinist," who do not actually believe the plain meaning of the words Christ and the writers of scripture spoke.
They think, like many who have believed in Christ for salvation, that you won't really know you are saved until the moment you die and stand before God. You have to work hard and be faithful every moment, or you won't continue to "be saved!"
Let me remind you of 2 Timothy 2:13:
"If we are faithless, He remains faithful: for He cannot deny Himself."
We may end up without rewards, with fire burning up our works of "wood, hay, and stubble" instead of revealing "gold, silver, and precious stones," but if we believed in Jesus, like that thief on the cross to whom Jesus said, "This day you shall be with me in Paradise," then we will be with Him eternally.
John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
