'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus is a hymn from the 1800s, born out of the personal tragedy experienced by Louisa M. R. Stead and her four-year-old daughter Lily.
On a summer day in New York, they went with Louisa's husband George to enjoy sunshine and a picnic lunch at the beach. Suddenly, a young boy, struggling in the water, cried out for help. George plunged into the water to save him - but they were both drowned.
In her anguish, Louisa penned the words of this poem, and shortly thereafter, William J. Kirkpatrick set it to music. Ever since, this hymn with its focus on "Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus," has comforted others as well.
